The majestic nature is only one of the attractions found in mountainous Arkadia, because here, on the grounds where the ancient gods would consummate, we find some of the most beautiful settlements in Greece, the villages of Mount Mainalo: Vytina, Lagadia, Dimitsana, Stemnitsa, Karytaina and so many more. They are all stunning, hospitable and make for a perfect winter vacation. This region was one of the cradles of the 1821 revolution and its memories are still alive in the stone-built houses, fortifications, churches and old watermills that produced the gunpowder for the arms of the revolutionaries. The tradition of Mainalo is also reflected in the top quality local products: noodles, lasagna, trachanas (a fermented mix of grain and yoghurt or milk), dairy, sweet desserts, aromatic plants, herbs… Holding a special place though, is the fir honey Mainalou “Vanilia” with PDO status produced by local beekeepers in a designated area around Vytina.
> You can participate in organised groups or enjoy solo skiing, snowboarding, rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, trekking, hiking, mountain climbing and other mountain sports in the area. You can also visit archaeological sites like Ancient Gortyna, as well as other places of significant historical interest. A definite must is a visit to the Open-Air Water Power Museum of the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation Museum Network, an exemplary outdoor museum dedicated to water power.
> Tasteful hotel accommodations operate in most villages. One of the best is the five-star Mylaon Boutigue Hotel & Spa in Vytina, where traditional aesthetic harmoniously coexists with luxury.
