Wintertime at Zagorohoria is magical, but it can often be hard. The activities for inexperienced climbers and hikers can be significantly limited. For example, it is impossible to cross the Vikos gorge – the world’s deepest in relation to its opening – or go up Drakolimni on Mount Tymfi at an altitude of 2,000 metres. Still, one can marvel at the Voidomatis river. The region’s stone built bridges and explore many of the 46 stunning villages embraced by the snow-capped mountains. And of course, visitors can always snuggle up in one of the area’s great guesthouses. There they can enjoy a hot drink and tsipouro in front of the fireplace. Furthermore, Zagori, with its two national parks and virgin nature, is a source of outstanding raw materials (meat, dairy products, wild greens, herbs, mushrooms, forest fruits) that can be turned into amazing dishes.

> Pies are always a part of the Zagorian table. Try them at Pita tis Kikitsas in Monodendri (+30 26530 71340) where they also serve an excellent kontosouvli (a meat dish roasted on a skewer). Salvia (+30 26530 41330), the restaurant of the Aristi Mountain Resort, serves traditional flavours with a gourmet touch, various local cheeses and has a rich wine cellar. At Riza in Elati (+30 26530 71550) you can try the delicious wild boar with plums and quince.
> One of the area’s top accommodations is undoubtedly the Aristi Mountain Resort located in Aristi. Apart from the comfort and discreet eco-friendly luxury of the rooms, it also has an amazing indoor heated pool and a unique view.
