Vioma: From Naxos with love

Vioma, provides experiences to all those who want to immerse themselves in the Naxian way of life.

The word “vioma” comes from the verb βιώ [vio, bio], which means to “live”. It is the experience we gain throughout our lives which forms our character and gives unique meaning to our daily life. With this in mind, Katerina Andrielou from Naxos, the largest island of the Cyclades, has created Vioma, which provides experiences to all those who want to immerse themselves in the Naxian way of life. As she herself points out: “On an island where history has helped form a rich and vibrant cultural bedrock, our eclectic gastronomy and multifaceted culture allow us to generously share our wealth with our friends. Cookery lessons, activities and cultural events take place all year round in selected areas of Naxos, enabling visitors to familiarise themselves with the island’s natural wealth”. And she tells us more:

How did you come up with the idea of creating Vioma?

It was a combination of our love for the authentic Naxos, the local cuisine and an innate need for communication. We also love to travel and during one trip we took part in a wine tasting. That’s when we said “and why not in Naxos?”. Another favourite winter habit, is having friends over and cooking together from morning to night.

Are the recipes in your cooking class exclusively from Naxos, or from the whole of Greece?

We try to offer only local recipes. But is it ever possible to leave out tzatziki or moussaka? We love the Greek cuisine, so we want our customers to try our favourites.

How many different “products” have you created and which one do you think has the most appeal to foreign visitors to the island?

We go by the recipes of our ancestors and many that have been entrusted to us by the locals. We love the baby goat in lemon sauce with potatoes, the rooster in red sauce with pasta and our pies.

Which are the three Naxian products one should try before leaving the island?

And your favourite part of the island?

Every part! What to choose first… The wonderful beaches? The picturesque villages? The cosmopolitan Chora?

What are your plans/ideas for the future?

To have more open houses and bring the visitors closer to the locals. That way they can live unique experiences and become part of our culture.
